Image Editor

From Shup

Jump to: navigation, search

The built-in image editor provides a paintbrush and a highlighter pen for drawing, as well as a rectangle tool for flood filling, drawing borders, cropping and blurring your images. It supports unlimited-ish levels of undo, so you can roll back changes if you like. You can also upload your image as many times as you want, directly from the editor (known as checkpointing around Shup HQ), and/or save the image locally.

The image editor is automatically invoked when a screenshot is captured, unless preview window is disabled (Note: The preview window is disabled by default for desktop capture). Preview window setting for a particular action can be toggled in Shup Preferences.

Existing images can also be opened in Shup by means of the Open Image option (Ctrl+O) under the File menu in the main window. Image files listed in the main window history list can be opened using the right click menu. Alternatively, if the shell extension is installed, files can also be opened in Shup through the right click menu in windows explorer. In addition to opening and editing existing images, the image editor can also be used to create new images through the File menu in the main window.

Paint Brush

The paint brush tool is the default tool when the editor window opens up. It can be selected either by using the appropriate button in the editor toolbar or by using the keyboard shortcut key b. The paint brush draws with strokes that approximate a circle.

The size of the brush, referred to by the unit shupples, can be changed by using one of two methods:

  1. Using the +/- keys
  2. Scrolling the mousewheel with the Ctrl key held down

The current shupples value is displayed in the bottom left corner of the editor in the status bar. The cursor also changes size to reflect the current brush size.

The status bar also displays the position of the cursor (Maus), the image size and the paintbrush color. Clicking on the brush color pane brings up the color palette. Other ways to change the brush color include using the toolbar button for palette, using keyboard shortcut key p, and the coolest method of all, right clicking on a color in current image (the brush picks up the color clicked on).

Highlighter

The highlighter tool is essentially a paint brush with transparency. It can be selected from the toolbar or by using the shortcut key h. In all other respects, it is similar to the paint brush tool.

Rectangular Marquee Tool

This tool can be used to select a rectangular region of the image. The shortcut key for this tool is r. Once an area is selected, it can be moved around in the editor by clicking inside the rectangle and grabbing it. Holding down the Ctrl key while while dragging it will cause the selected piece of the underlying image to be moved along with the marquee. The rectangle's size can be altered by dragging the edges.

The following actions can be performed once an area is selected:

  • Crop
  • Draw Border
  • Blur (interior and exterior)
  • Flood fills (interior and exterior)
  • Uploading of just the selection

Cropping is achieved by either pressing the Enter key or c key after selecting an area. Alternatively, one can use the Crop button in the toolbar or the Crop to option under the Select menu.

All other actions can be accessed from the right click (inside the selected area) menu.
